Our=20 Mission:

The mission of The Safe Schools Coalition: A = Public-Private=20 Partnership in Support of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender = Youth is to=20 help schools - at home and all over the world - become safe places = where=20 every family can belong, where every educator can teach, and where = every=20 child can learn, regardless of gender identity or sexual=20 orientation.

Our=20 Role:

We used to be the = 'Safe Schools=20 Coalition of Washington,' but now we proudly serve a world-wide = constituency=20 -- with some services specifically for our Washington = members.

Our role is to reduce bias-based bullying and = violence in=20 schools and to help schools better meet the needs of sexual minority = youth=20 and children with sexual minority parents/guardians locally, = nationally and=20 internationally, by ...

  1. providing resources = to schools=20 (posters, publications),

  2. raising = parent/guardian,=20 student, educator and community awareness (list serve, website, = public=20 speaking, media),

  3. providing = skill-based training=20 for educators (administrators and other professional and = paraprofessional=20 staff),

  4. serving as a = technical advisory=20 resource (to researchers, policy-makers, educators and activists = --=20 students, parents/guardians, community members), and

  5. conducting and = disseminating=20 research (to educators, policy-makers and activists). =

The Safe Schools = Coalition also=20 serves the community within Washington State by ...

  1. intervening and = advocating on=20 behalf of individual students, educators and families experiencing = sexual=20 orientation/identity-based harassment and violence, and =

  2. holding = legislators, school=20 boards and school administrators accountable for making schools = safe and=20 free of bias-based bullying and violence, through community = organizing and=20 principled activism.

Our=20 History:

1988 -- Seattle Commission on Children and = Youth=20 holds hearings on the needs of gay and lesbian youth in = Seattle

1988 -- the Commission issues a report = including=20 twenty-one recommendations for addressing those needs and convenes = an ad hoc=20 =93Advisory Committee on Gay/Lesbian Youth and Schools=94 to offer = technical=20 assistance to the school district in implementing the = recommendations that=20 are school-specific

1989-1990 -- The Advisory = Committee:

  • assists the Seattle = School=20 District in training staff

  • contributes = technical=20 assistance that results in several policy changes

  • gradually begins to = consult=20 with other King County school districts

1991 -- The Advisory Committee, since has = gradually=20 begun serving a wider geographic area than Seattle, spins off from = the=20 Seattle Commission, becoming the "Schools Committee" of the American = Friends=20 Service Committee's GLBT Youth Program

1991 =96 The Schools = Committee:

  • serves as a = clearinghouse for=20 various organizations' efforts to help schools become safe and = healthy=20 places for gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth

  • continues to assist = the Seattle=20 School District in training staff -- initially principals and = counselors=20 -- regarding the special needs of sexual minority youth=20

1992 =96 The Schools Committee:

  • develops resource = notebooks for=20 Seattle School Counselors

  • publishes a revised = version of=20 the State Superintendent=92s "Guidelines for Identifying Bias," a = tool for=20 assessing the inclusiveness and respectfulness of curricula and = library=20 resources

  • helps AFSC expand = its training=20 efforts to public and private schools outside of Seattle =

  • brings Equity = Institute=20 trainers to Washington State to provide a weekend workshop on = equity=20 issues for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender educators and = youth=20 workers

1993 =96 The Schools Committee, now working = for=20 statewide school safety, spins off once again, becoming the "Safe = Schools=20 Coalition of Washington"

1993-1998 -- the Safe Schools = Coalition:

  • provides testimony = to=20 legislators regarding the potential impacts of bills and technical = assistance regarding their wording

  • continues to = sponsor or=20 cosponsor training events for educators and community groups, = including=20 workshops on "coming out=94 for educators, the Bullyproof = curriculum, and=20 "anti-gay harassment and violence and schools"

  • produces three = powerful public=20 service announcements for television, challenging adults to "be = there for=20 every child"

  • publishes a = first-of-its-kind=20 Safe Schools Resource Guide, to assist educators in making = appropriate=20 community referrals and in accessing resources such as books, = videos,=20 websites, posters, theater troupes and curricula

  • conducts a landmark = five-year=20 qualitative study entitled the "Safe Schools Anti-Violence = Documentation=20 Project," documenting incidents of anti-gay harassment and = violence in=20 Washington schools (K-12) *

  • begins providing = advocacy and=20 intervention for individual students, educators and families =85 = assistance=20 communicating with administrators, police, and/or attorneys =

  • proudly accepts = awards for=20 leadership in violence prevention and civil rights from the City = of=20 Seattle and Providence Medical Center, the Gay Lesbian Straight = Education=20 Network, the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington and = Equality=20 Washington

Fall 2001 =96 = In recognition=20 of our growing e-services and training on an international scale, = the=20 Coalition launched this new web site, dropped the "of Washington" = from our=20 name and changed our mission. Our mission became, "A Public-Private Partnership in Support of Gay, Lesbian, = Bisexual and=20 Transgender Youth is to help schools - at home and all over the = world -=20 become safe places where every family can belong, where every = educator can=20 teach, and where every child can learn, regardless of gender = identity or=20 sexual orientation."=20

The term "anti-gay" is used here to denote = incidents=20 motivated by bias against gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender = people. Some=20 of those targeted are actually heterosexual; the bias is the = critical=20 factor.
